On Saturday 28 April, a large group of Tala schoolchildren accompanied Tala resident, cyclist and fund raiser, Petros as he started his marathon cycle ride from Paphos to Nicosia to raise money for the Cyprus Anti Cancer Charity. On Sunday 29 April, those same children were then bussed through to Nicosia, along with their bikes, so they could accompany Petros for the final distance and to clear the finishing line.
The event takes place annually in Cyprus to commemorate the anniversary of when Christodoula, an elderly cancer sufferer from Famagusta, as a refugee after the invasion, walked the roads and was found to have passed away under a tree at Sotira without any medical assistance or nursing care.
The Cyprus Anti Cancer Charity raises some €500,000 annually from this event and needs around €3m each year to maintain its services to cancer sufferers and their families for free.
